Dental Implant care and tips!
The placement of dental implants involves an intervention consisting of three phases. In a first phase the implant is placed provisionally and then proceed to the second phase, osseointegration. This phase is important since in some cases the bone and surrounding tissue might reject the implant. However, this situation is very rare. After the dental implant is secured we proceed to the last phase, which consists of the placement of the abutment and crown that will function as the normal tooth. When we get to this stage we should follow the dentist’s care instruction to ensure that implant will still function for many years.
After placing the dental implant, there are several precautions you should take. Care should be specially taken in your oral cleaning routine. It is recommended not to brush the area where dental implants have been placed until the points are removed. In addition it is imperative to avoid harmful foods like alcohol, coffee or tobacco. It is also advisable to moderate physical activity for a couple of days.
For dental implants to have a long life it is necessary to take care of them. In this sense it is essential to maintain good oral hygiene. The cleaning techniques are the same as with natural teeth, small sweeping circles on each dental piece, covering the entire surface of the tooth, even from the inside. However, it is advisable to use a soft toothbrush, a medium at most, to avoid damaging the gums around the implant. It is also important to clean interdental spaces and avoid plaque buildup, which can lead to complications in dental implants such as periimplantitis. Make sure to use floss BEFORE brushing.
