Review: "This dentistry was the best I've been to" - Smile makeover case
We always try to share the comments of our patients doing smile makeovers with porcelain crowns and we are so happy when they leave a review in places like Realself, our Facebook page or our Google+ profile. This time we got an amazing chronicle of the experience of one our Canadian patients that visited us for dental crowns. This is her review:
I went to Cancun Mexico last week for some cosmetic work done on my teeth. I went to Cancun cosmetic dentistry about 20 minutes from the hotel zone in Cancun. I went to the dentist Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. About 15-20 hours of work. My procedure costed 5000 American dollars. I am from Canada so it equaled out to about 7500 Canadian.
Monday- I came into the dentistry by complimentary taxi and received a very warm welcoming. My first impression of the dentistry was very good. Very clean, nice and cool inside. It wasn’t long before I got brought into the rooms in the back where I was introduced to the man that actually made me decide on this practice. Dr.German Arzate. If you look him up on YouTube you will see why i was so confident in my decision. He sat down and asked me about my concerns regarding my teeth and any issues or pain I have. My teeth were not horrible in the front it missed colored, my teeth in the back on the other hand were a complete mess. When him and I spoke on the phone prior to my arrival the plan (not set in stone cause he hadn’t actually seen my teeth in person yet) was to remove most of my back teeth and replace them with implants. But with my budget on the lower end we decided to instead focus on my teeth in the front and come back at a later date to do the implants. He wanted to start the work the same day but it was in no condition after my flight to start right away. He understood and gave me a time to come back Tuesday. (They took some X-rays and videos for teaching purposes)
Tuesday- I come in Tuesday at 930 a.m. I meet 2 other dentists who take impressions and then get to work on filling down my front teeth to little baby teeth. After that was done about 2 hours later they wanted to do my extractions in the back which I was not looking forward to in the slightest. (The dentist who did this was my ultimate favorite and probably the only reason I would go back to this dentistry) Jesus was very compassionate, always making sure that I was comfortable and aware of what was going on. I am not the easiest patient I’m sure, I would consider myself quite a baby actually, but yet he was very patient and considerate of my feelings/ minor breakdowns. 4 hours later, I was ready to get out of there. They made me a set of acrylic teeth to go on top of my shaved down teeth, glued them on and I was good to go and try to enjoy some sun while the crowns were made.
Thursday- Today I was again seen by Jesus. He did my final extractions from the bottom on my mouth then stitched me up.
Saturday- Today is the day I got my crowns placed. Two female dentists who were very very sweet and comforting were by my side making sure everything felt good, my bite was proper and they looked natural. THIS was a VERY painful process. I don’t know if everyone having crowns placed experienced this but I DEFINITELY felt the pain. The numbness and sensitivity on my front teeth was unbearable, the numbing they put in seemed to do nothing at all and I was very vocal about that. To say the least, it was not a pleasant experience. But through my bitching and crying, the two woman and Jesus were very understanding and so patient with me. Which was really nice and made me feel very safe and cared for. After the crowns were finally placed they then whitened and cleaned my frontal lower teeth.
Overall I have to say that this dentistry was the best I’ve been to. It is of equal standard to any dentist in Canada if not better.

The 5 most common misconceptions about dental implants
Dental Implants in Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry
When people come to Cancun for Dental Implants or to any other dental clinic in general, there are some times when the patients have a wrong idea about what dental implants are and how they function. Is very important for both the patient and the doctor to make sure the patient understands clearly the steps procedure and details about care. For that reason we have gathered here the 5 most common misconceptions about dental implants:
- Dental Implants require less care than real teeth. This one is very common. Some people believe that because these are not ‘real teeth’ and are artificial, they do not require any more cleaning and protection. This is wrong. Titanium implants can still be subject to degradation if the plaque build up is not taken cared off with good oral hygiene.
- Dental implants are made of real teeth: Some people think implants can be made from real teeth because they don’t want metal on their gums. So far, there are only 2 main materials used for dental implants: titanium and zirconia. These are the most biocompatible materials so far that can bond with the bone and other human tissue without problems.
- Anyone can get dental implants. Dental implant technology has advanced a lot and many more people can enjoy restoring their life with new teeth… but sometimes patients don’t have enough bone or the bone is too fragile/brittle. This is the reason why our doctors always need to make a clinical evaluation as well of taking panoramic x-rays to make sure you are a candidate for dental implants.
- Dental Implants are similar to root canals. Some people get confused with implants and root canals because of the “posts” used in root canals. These are two very different procedures. The root canal’s main goal is to save the tooth for as long as possible, but when that is not possible anymore and the tooth falls or needs to be extracted the dental implant usually becomes the best option to replace it.
- The crowns of dental implants are permanent. While dental implants are meant to last, the crowns and the abutment conector to the implant might need to get replaced. Just like regular porcelain crowns, these can get loose or crack under pressure so the patient might need to get new ones years later.

Why can’t we smell our own breath? – Halitosis/Bad Breath problems
Why can't we smell our own breath?
Usually, the most common way we realize we have halitosis (bad breath) is when someone close to us, like a friend or a family member tell us “psst, psst, you have bad breath!”, and then we feel completely embarrassed trying to figure out who else did you talked to. Ouch! So we wonder WHY we didn’t realize sooner? In fact there might be several reasons why is very difficult for us to smell our own bad breath but most of them are still hypothesis.
First is the theory that we are too accustomed to our own body odors. The idea might be valid. The same can happen with the environment in which we live. Have you noticed that you can detect subtle smells of your house until you return from a vacation? The same can apply to breath; Maybe you’re too used to smelling it that you just tune it out. Another reason might be that we exhale/inhale differently when talking than how we do it during breathing. When you speak, you are more likely to agitate the back of the mouth, which is where halitosis is formed.
The next idea is that our inability to smell our own breath – or the inside of the nose, for that matter – is an evolutionary development. According to this particular theory, it would be overwhelming for the nose to constantly pick up the smell of respiration beneath it, and this could prevent it from detecting other more important odors for safety and survival. As a result, the mind learned to block the smell of the nearest neighbor of the nose.
So how do you know if you have bad breath? Common methods include licking and then sniffing the inside of the wrist, or examining the tongue in the mirror to see if it is covered by a whitish hue. That white stuff in your mouth is plaque build up, just like the one you get on your teeth, and it means it is full of bacteria and food debris. It is recommended that beside the regular tooth brushing and flossing you also scrap your tongue with a spoon to work on getting rid of this accumulation of yeast and bacteria. Make sure to also visit your dentist regularly at least once a year to check on your oral health as also many mouth diseases and infections can cause bad breath.
