What are the differences of porcelain crowns and zirconia crowns?

Crowns are an excellent choice to restore the looks of your smile by changing shape, size and color of your teeth. Sometimes crowns are necessary for root canals. They are also necessary for bridges and to rehabilitate dental implants. There are two main materials used for dental crowns and that is porcelain and zirconia. You might be wondering what is the main difference between the two.
Porcelain crowns are the most common material used for dental restorations. Most dentists are used to work with them and come in a wide range of tones and colors to match your other teeth or to get a complete smile makeover.
Zirconia crowns on the other hand are a tad more expensive but provide a few advantages, mainly that Zirconia has a small level of transparency around the edges, which is similar to the enamel of our teeth. This gives them an improved natural look.

 

There is also a third option of porcelain crowns with metal. Metal-porcelain crowns are not bad looking and have been used for many years. Although they are also aesthetic, they appear a little more opaque because the metal does not allow the transmission of light like porcelain metal free or zirconia  do.
