They used high energy x-rays at the Swiss Light Source in Switzerland and managed to reveal the composition and structure development of its teeth and bones.
They were able to visualize every tissue, cell and growth line within the bone jaws. Then, they made comparisons with the embryology stages of other living vertebrates, allowing them to discover that the placoderms fishes like Compagopiscis actually possessed teeth. This could completely change the previously held theories and push the existence of teeth much more further back. This has taken longer than expected as research had been held back waiting for non-destructive technology so they could still preserve the original fossils.
