An affordable dental vacation in Cancun!?
Vacations in Cancun (photo by Irving Huertas)
“Cheap hotels for an affordable vacation in Cancun? Nah. That can’t be real… Cancun is expensive!” You might be thinking this but the truth will surprise you!
Yes, Cancun is a Caribbean paradise with beautiful turquoise waters and white sand beaches. It came to be on the early 70’s when Mexico’s government made an ambitious mega-project that would see the birth of a handful of “tourists cities”. Cancun was the first to be created and soon it became clear it would become the crown jewel of all of them. It simply bloomed. The beaches, the fauna, the reefs, everything seemed taken from a dream! In the 80’s and early 90’s there were but a few exclusive hotels where the wealthy would come to spend long vacations.
Is from these early days that the idea of Cancun as a luxury destination perpetuated. With time, as the city area grew, also did the idea of more accessible hotels for nationals without sacrificing quality.
Cancun is over 40 years now and has developed into a big modern city of more than 600,000 people who call it home. Separated from the downtown area, the Hotel Zone also features a wide range of accommodations for all kinds of budgets. Sure, we still have 5 star luxury hotels in Cancun, but just the same you will find affordable business hotels and even house rentals.
While our clinic doesn’t work directly with any hotel in particular we can suggest some that can fit your budget nicely when coming for a dental treatment. Also remember book your flight in advance to take advantage of discounts of the low seasons. This would allow you to come to get your dental work done while you enjoy the beach! You will realize that coming to our dental clinic in Cancun would still be way cheaper than (for example) doing a smile makeover in USA. Meet new people, discover new places, eat delicious food and smile again for LESS than back home! What’s not to love?

“Dia de Muertos” in Cancun and Riviera Maya!
Dia de Muertos
Halloween is coming up soon in USA, as well as the “Dia de Muertos” in Mexico. While Halloween have its roots on Celtic traditions to guard off ghosts and other spirits just when the days became shorter and colder, marking the end of summer and harvest. Eventually, Christianity adapted the festival into the All Saints Days to attract more converts in its first few centuries. By the time Catholicism arrived to what is actual Mexico, they local traditions were also adapted into a new holiday.
Death had always been a prominent motif on prehispanic cultures with the use of skulls, flowers and altars to honor the dead. People are more familiar with the “Dia de Muertos” from central Mexico, because the Aztec Empire consisted about half of current Mexico. On the other hand, the Southern part and the Yucatan Peninsula was in fact Mayan territory. They have a similar, yet disctinctive culture and traditions. For example, the Mayans believed that when someone died, they remained behind in our world for a time, not yet realizing they were dead.
Both Aztecs and Mayans had festivals around the same dates honoring the spirits and souls of the departed following the same logic as the Celts. For Mayans, this week long festival was called Hanal Pixan, meaning “Feast of the Souls“. They would decorate their houses and place and altar with the favorite meals of the departed. Different days were focused on different types of people… for example there was a day dedicated specifically to children, who also got toys on their altars.
In modern times, there is worry that people will forget about the rich traditions about death from all over Mexico. This is why every year from over the last decade, the Xcaret eco-park has been holding an impressive festival to share it with the whole world. This “Festival of Life and Death” is an excellent opportunity to really get to know Mexican culture… a unique mix of native adapted beliefs to Catholicisms. People from around Mexico will come together here to share their music, gastronomy, art, dance, plays and poetry related with this holiday.
The festival takes place on Xcaret‘s park grounds in the afternoon up until around midnight during the 30th and 31st of October, and the 1st and 2nd of November. If you are in Cancun or Riviera Maya for your dental vacation don’t miss this opportunity! There are many Xcaret boots through Cancun’s Hotel Zone and downtown where you should be able to get information or you can even order online here.

The 7 things to buy during your vacation in Cancun!
Mercado 28 Cancun
While you are in Cancun for dental tourism, it will be the perfect opportunity to get some souvenirs to bring back home. There are plenty of amazing places to go shopping in Cancun which offer all kinds of goods. Here are some suggestions you should totally look up during your vacation in Cancun!
Huipil/Guayabera: These are the traditional garments of the region. Huipiles are white dresses with vibrant embroidments around the neck, while guayaberas are fresh cotton shirts which are commonly used for special occasions. They are the best way to beat the heat of the Caribbean and still look awesome about it!
Hammocks: It is not uncommon for people in the Yucatan Peninsula to still use hammocks to sleep. They are allow the air flow keeping you fresh as night and come morning, they can be taken away, using relatively little to no space. They can be made of both natural and synthetic fibers so you can choose the one you like the most to have a nap when you go back home.
Sombrero: This is perhaps the most Mexican thing you can buy on markets. While in modern times Mexicans don’t wear the mariachi sombrero, they do make an exception on patriotic days like the Independence Day (September 16th) and Revolution Day (November 20th) to celebrate with traditional foods and music. EXTRA TIP: Before you go ahead and buy a sombrero, make sure your airline doesn’t have a problem with bringing the hat onboard. There are some airlines that don’t allow big sombreros because they might not fit on the upper compartments.
Xtabentun: Never heard of Xtabentun? This is a liquour made of honey made specially by “Mayan bees” that are exclusively feed with Xtabentun flowers. It’s sweet flavor is unique… and it has also quite the punch! If you want to try an exotic drink this is the one to go for in Cancun!
Tequila: Of course we couldn’t leave out the most Mexican drink! You won’t have a problem finding tequila in Cancun. Just remember that you can’t bring liquids into the airplane’s deck so pack it safely on your luggage to check it in for cargo. Also, don’t forget to buy some caballitos glasses along with your tequila! The experience wouldn’t be complete without them!
Silver crafts: Mexico is the largest producer of silver in the world, and because of this they have developed a special love for all kinds of crafts with this precious metal. You will find anything from jewelry, silverware, figurines and more on silver stores called “platerías”.
Traditional Mexican toys: Your collection of Mexican souvenirs wouldn’t be complete without some handcrafted wooden toys. Small dolls, spinners, Yo-Yos and all kinds of figurines can be found on places like Coral Negro and Market 28 (Mercado 28).

Summer Vacation in Cancun!
Vacation in Cancun
Summer is here! Thinking on coming over and enjoy this tropical paradise and get some dental work done at the same time? This is the right decision for you! The beaches start to fill and Cancun is bustling with life during this season.
Cancun is made up by two main zones: downtown and the Hotel Zone, which is technically a long stretch of an island connected to the main land through two small bridges. The Hotel zone has two coast lines… on one side you have the Caribbean Sea with its signature white sand beaches, and in the other side you will find the Nichupte Lagoon. The lagoon has plenty of mangroves and even some crocodiles!
You will get to see sail boats navigating down the lagoon and along the coast, decorated with strip lights that make it seems like out of a dream.
You can take advantage of Cancun’s proximity to several archaeological sites around the Yucatan Peninsula. Right here in the hotel zone you can find the Mayan Museum, which has access to a small local site. Chichen Itza is a couple of hours away by car or by bus. There are plenty of tours available to take you there, offering transportation, a small lunch and some even have the option of enjoying a fascinating night show at the pyramid.
Closer to Cancun, you can also opt for an evening at Xoximilco, one of Xcaret‘s theme parks. This place is amazing! It is seeks to duplicate the feeling of the traditional “trajineras” found on Mexico City. These are flat boats where family and friends enjoy a small Mexican party with music, drinks and food as they float down a water way.
You can also go fishing and golfing in Cancun! Right in Cancun you will find 4 main golf courses: Puerto Cancun Golf Club, the Cancun Golf Club at Pok-Ta-Pok, the Riviera Cancun Golf Club and the Iberostar Cancun Golf Club. You will find several other golf courses south of the airport, on the way to Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen.
You can enjoy all of these during your vacation in Cancun while you wait for your dental work to finish.
