How selfies have changed the world of smiles and dentistry

Believe it or not, selfies have affected the dentistry industry in a very important way. Some people might be just tired of seeing their friends and other contacts posting selfies at any given time, but something unique has been happening for the last decade or so since social media has permeated our daily lives.

People who used to not smile in photos because they had ugly teeth or dental problems have started to realize how they look on their friend’s photos. Everyone is shown to be happy, except for them. This is a sad reality and many have started to wish they could also show how much fun they are having or how glad they really are. For this same reason, more and more patients have started to visit the dentist regularly, asking for smile makeovers and above all, teeth whitening. We have actually seen this trend at our dental clinic in Cancun. The number of walk in patients looking for teeth whitening services during their vacation have increased.

Getting teeth whitening and a smile makeover in Cancun is very easy. The whitening only requires a couple of hours to get done, and the smile makeover about 8 to 10 days (depending if you want only porcelain crowns or a dental implant treatment). Our patients leave with a new smile back home and start taking selfies and smiling without being afraid of what other people will say about their teeth. We are very glad to be able to help everyone to restore their self-esteem and confidence to enjoy life fully with their loved ones.

Dentistry tips for Halloween Candy to avoid tooth decay, cavities and caries!

Are you ready for Monday!? Halloween is around the corner and we know many of our patients are concerned for the dental health of their children… and let’s be honest, we also get to enjoy our own share of sweets that day! The candy obtained on Halloween can even last for several months if you had good luck finding out the most bountiful houses. Regulating the consumption of these delicious treats can be a challenge for any parent. There are number of things we can do for our children (and ourselves!) when dealing with Halloween candy. Check these tips to protect your smile and teeth from cavities:
Avoid snacking candy:
Eating candy between meals is a terrible idea for both your diet and your dental health… specially if it’s a sugary snack! That’s why…

Eat candy right after a meal:
If you want to threat your children or yourself with Halloween candy, eat it after a meal as a desert. At this time your mouth is already increased production of saliva and these can help suppress the brunt of the effect of sugary foods and bacteria. Limit them to 2 or 3 candies per meal at most, depending on the size, this could be even just 1 a day.

Stay away from sticky candies:
Sticky candies can pose a big problem for your teeth, forcing them to work harder than usual and increasing your chances of tooth decay because they take longer to get «dissolved» by saliva, specially if they get stuck on hard to reach places between your teeth.

Reduce intake of soda and sugary drinks:
You are already taking much more sugar than usual! There is no need to increase your chances of cavities even more with sugary drinks.
Donate the rest:
You and your children might end up with lots of candies that you don’t like. It is better to give them to someone who might like them instead of keeping them in your house as a temptation. If they stay around, you could make an excuse like «just one time» or «let’s try this», «there nothing else to snack» and end up eating more candy that you ever expected.

Double down on your dental hygiene:
You must be strict with your brushing and flossing habits every time you eat Hallowing candy. Brush at least twice a day (morning and night), and floss before going to sleep to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Schedule your dentist appointment:
There is no better time to remember to book your dentist appointment than Halloween, when your teeth might be vulnerable. Make sure you and your kids have good dental health before going for Trick or Treat this Halloween!

Teeth regeneration: The future of dental implants

Recent dental studies suggest that the future of dentistry lies on dental restoration treatments as an alternative for dental implants. Considering the wear, infections and accidents suffered by teeth throughout life, finding a way to regenerate new teeth would be a huge advance for dentistry. Understanding the operation of dental regeneration of alligators (one of the few animals who can regenerate their teeth) would be key to find ways to apply it to the human species.

Thus adult teeth that have been damaged due to consumption of acidic and sugary foods, those that have been lost by accidents or even teeth that have fallen because of periodontal disease may recover by creating new teeth. Future dentists could develop new methods for generating human teeth based on  active stem cells. A study conducted by several Chinese laboratories found that certain dental structures can be generated by stem cells. This assumption means that we could regenerate dental tissue specific stem cells provided by the patient.

Although adult stem cells have been effectively used in various treatments related to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, much more research is still required to bring to fruition dental regeneration. This particular study concluded that stem cells from human urine containing enamel could be the key for such breakthrough.

One of the main challenges of regeneration is to provide dental structures that have long-term integrity. Dental implants are made of titanium so they provide a strong structural integrity and the new regenerated tissue would have to offer a similar strength. It might take a couple of decades before this can become a reality but we will do out best to offer you the most modern treatment available if it happens.

Toothpaste color code is fake not truth myth rumor

Not many people are concerned with the type of toothpaste they use but if you are interested on your dental health you might have come across tons of dental tips and rumors about things you can do to get white teeth, recipes for toothaches and even alternatives for dental procedures. One particular information we are going to talk about today is the rumor that there is a hidden code on your toothpaste tube. We have found this image in the web and we need to start explaining everything wrong with it.

Toothpaste color myth rumor fake hoax

First of all… all toothpaste is chemical. No question about it. People seem to forget everything in nature is a chemical. Even when some claim they use only baking soda because is «chemical free» they don’t know soda is in fact NaHCO3 or Sodium hydrogen carbonate. On our previous blog post we actually talked about the alternative uses of toothpaste and its ingredients, chiefly aluminium hydroxide and calcium carbonate.

The chart above is completely bogus. Medicinal toothpaste does not have a color mark either. Here is an example of an specialized paste medicine for gums:

Medicinal toothpaste for gums

Here’s the pic of a regular toothpaste:

Regular toothpaste color fake myth rumor hoax

Beyond the medicinal ingredients, the one real difference between the two is the package. That’s what it all boils down to. The machines that make the plastic tubes require a visual cue to know where to cut and seal the tube for packaging. It generally needs to be a darker color than the rest for the computer to recognize it. That’s why you will generally see the color strips over white, so the contrast makes it easier to identify.
Here you can see the process of production of a toothpaste. You can tell the machine is using the dark color as reference to make it face the right direction through the production line (around 3:33).

The more you know! Share this post with your friends and let them know the truth about the colors on the tubes. Make sure your facts are confirmed before sharing photos with rumors like the above. Is very important to fight off  disinformation in any health field; someone’s health could be hanging in the balance! Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry will always do our best to give you real and accurate scientific information to look after your dental health. Let us know if you have any other question!

High Quality Dental Implants Cost in Cancun

When it comes to high quality dental implants for an affordable price, Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry is the right answer for you. Our dear patient Mike found out about us some years ago and he was very happy to be able to smile again without spending outrageous sums of money. Dental implants in Cancun cost about $899 USD, plus abutment and crown for $750 USD. Mike got an estimate for the same kind of implants in USA for about $3,000 USD each. There was no way he was going to afford that. Luckily for him, cheaper doesn’t mean low quality. We use the exact same brands and FDA approved materials as the best dentists in USA. You can confirm with our dental planners by chatting with them on the instant chat window in the lower left corner of the page.

Going back to Mike, he loves Cancun. He enjoys having a vacation here to go sightseeing and taking his favorite drink while relaxing at the beach. There are many things to do in Cancun and he always recommends people to come. He also recommends our services. In fact he left this small message the last time he visited us:

Doctor Cesar – wonderful. Doctor Wendy – wonderful. This clinic is fabulous! Upfront about prices. High quality, reasonable prices and friendly competent staff. This is my fifth time here. Highly recommended!

Mike is pictured above with Doctor Victoria and Paty, our dental planner. These are a couple of faces you will get acquaintanced with during your appointments. We always make sure you feel at home and at ease to have the most pleasant dental experience.

Did you know there are several animals that boast teeth regeneration among their natural traits? It might sound like some kind of super power but to be honest it seems like a very practical idea to apply to humans. Imagine if a tooth gets knocked off or falls victim to cavities, it would be so much better to simply wait for the next tooth to regrow. After all, we already had baby teeth, right? Well… things are not so simple.

Bunny Eating A Carrot chewing with incisive teeth While some animals are able to regrow their teeth partially or completely, the mechanics behind the process is very complex. Rodents, for example, have incisors that never stop growing. In the case of Chinchillas, they have a higher fiber diet so their molars are continuously growing like their incisors. This is the reason they chew on everything almost obsessively… if they don’t wear their teeth down they could eventually end up piercing their own skulls or keep them from eating and starve! Ok, maybe regenerating teeth are not for us…

Then what about sharks?

Rows of shark teeth regeneration - Cancun Cosmetic DentistryShark shed their teeth during all their lives and some are said to shed about 35,000 teeth during their lifetime! This is why is so easy to find shark teeth at the beach and ocean floor. We might  think the rows and rows of shark teeth aren’t nice to look at but we can’t deny they are simply amazing! Their teeth are not as strongly joined with the bone of the jaw like our own teeth because sharks don’t chew. They can only bite, trash and shake around to try to dislodge a piece of their new found meal. If the shark got his tooth (and mouth) stuck to his meal it could spell doom for the shark, so in fact, their teeth sit on cartilage rather than bone. This allows it to dislodge easily! As soon as a tooth is missing, the next one in the row starts to sprout.

Rows of shark teeth regeneration - Cancun Cosmetic DentistryAnother interesting thing about shark teeth is their coating. They are covered with acid-resistant fluorapatite enamel that makes cavities virtually impossible. That’s certainly something we would love to have! Our enamel is not as resistant but it generally allows healthy teeth to survive much much longer than the rest of our bones.

Researches are still trying to find ways so they can apply some of the attributes from these animals on humans. Perhaps one day we can get a regeneration toothpaste or even a small organic tooth implant. Until then we are pretty much stuck with our usual teeth so we need to give them the best care possible to keep them clean and healthy!

Send us your x-rays and photos so we can give you a personal evaluation of your case at no charge.  If you want to know more about our services call toll free from USA and Canada 1-800-565-1424, or if you are already on vacation in Cancun and want to meet us, you can call us for an appointment at the following local number (998) 1-40-51-25.

Paleolithic dentistry

As it turns out, recent research has left anthropologists and dentists alike fascinated with the discovery of new evidence of dentistry being performed some 14,000 years ago! The discovery was done by a group of Italian scientists from the universities of Bologna and Ferrara.

Malocclusion on early farmersThe information has been published in the journal of Scientific Reports. It all started with a skeleton dating from the Paleolithic, found on 1988 on the Venetian Dolomites. Experts realized there was a curious hole on the lower third molar and further analyzes confirmed that it was a carious cavity that had been intentionally treated.

«What the results show – explains Stefano Benazzi of the University of Bologna, coordinator of the research group – is that the tooth from Villabruna represents the most ancient evidence of manual intervention of a caries. This finding also suggests that in the Upper Palaeolithic humans were aware of the harmful effects of caries infection and the need for action; through the help of a flint microlith (small, sharp stone tool), the diseased tissue was removed and the tooth cleaned in depth.»  Until now, the oldest evidence of «paleodentistry» dated from around seven to nine thousand years ago. This pushes back the beginnings of dentistry almost 5,000 years!

Researchers still don’t know if the Villabruna man was given any natural drugs/concoctions for the pain. Yikes! That would have been pretty harsh to go through. I’m just glad we are living in this era. We have certainly come a long way since then. Right now, our advanced tools are precise and with the help of x-rays and local anesthesia you don’t have to keep suffering for cavities and other dental afflictions. Don’t shy away from your dentists because of fear or shame. We are here to help you!

For a long time the jaw bone structure of ancient humans has fascinated anthropologists and dentists alike. As it happens there are some marked differences between the structure on hunter gatherer groups (28,000 BCE) and the early farmers on (12,000 BCE).

The research done on the first farmers of the Levant shows are smaller versions of their hunter-gatherer predecessors. The diet of the hunter-gatherer was based on «hard» foods like wild uncooked vegetables and meat, while the staple diet of the sedentary farmer is based on «soft» cooked or processed foods like cereals and legumes. With soft cooked foods there is less of a requirement for chewing which in turn lessens the size of the jaws but without a corresponding reduction in the dimensions of the teeth, there is no adequate space in the jaws and this often results in malocclusion and dental crowding.

The link between chewing, diet, and related dental wear patterns is well known in the scientific literature. Today, malocclusion and dental crowding affects around one in five people in modern-world populations.

Here at Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry we see this problem everyday with people who have lost most or all of their teeth. The bone on their maxilla or jaw start to lose volume because of the lack of chewing stimuli. This provokes the remaining teeth to shift and cause all kinds of problems.

This is why is so important to try to keep your mouth in top condition, prevention tooth decay or replacing missing teeth. Affordable Dental Crowns in Cancun

We had the privilege to have Judi Heim at our clinic on May. She’s a lovely lady from New York who has an amazing personality. She’s retired now but used to run a hat store called «Where to get that hat». Very catchy!! Her daughter is in charge of the store now, but Judi told us she would love to open up one here. I would definitely like to see that happening. She came looking to improve her smile with some affordable dental crowns in Cancun and we delivered results!

Judi used to have bad experiences with dentists in the past until her mother Rae Heim told her about our dental services in Cancun. We always get referrals from family members and we make sure they feel welcomed and well taken care of! By the end of her vacation, Judi felt fantastic, happy and changed. We are so glad you feel this way Judi!
