We are back answering some of your questions about cosmetic dentistry in Cancun! These were the ones we felt were worth sharing in the blog.
How safe are dental x-rays?
This is a surprising question we would like to address here. As many people already know, we get exposed to all kinds of radiation on our everyday life. We get radiation all day from the sun, the ground and even some electronic appliances. The technology we use in dentistry has advanced to such an extend that we can take digital x-rays which require much less radiation than a regular x-ray plaque. This minimizes risks as much as possible. In Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry have a digital panoramic x-ray machine at our clinic, as well as a hand-held x-ray, which are pretty safe. We will always look after your safety, so if you request it you can have a cover for your shoulders. And obviously, let us know if you are pregnant beforehand.
What diseases make me more susceptible to dental complications?
Perhaps the most common disease that can lead to complications are gingivitis and its more serious version, periodontitis. These are very common among adults. They are gum diseases that can end up making you lose your teeth and attack the bone of your maxilla. This usually happens because the plaque that builds up on your gums and the crevices between your teeth become a perfect environment for the reproduction of bacteria. This bacteria can be also be responsible for cavities and further tooth loss.
What medications can damage my teeth and gums?
There are some medications that can result on some type of decay for your teeth. For example, you shouldn’t chew aspirins as they are acidic. Syrups for coughs can also be a problem for their high content of sugars. Chemo medication could also lead to dry mouth and gum problems; in fact, if you are diagnosed with cancer, you should go to your dentist right away for a check up and cleaning, to minimize any future complications. In any case, you should follow your doctor’s orders to take the chemo and worry about the rest later. We have had cancer survivors come to our clinic to restore their smiles. A tooth’s look can be fixed with cosmetic dentistry, and we want you smiling for years to come.
