We have a another good reason to go to the dentist to avoid periodontitis. A Study from the University of Southampton and King’s College London links periodontitis with an increased likelihood of cognitive impairment with early-stage Alzheimer’s.
On the six-month follow-up of 59 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, the authors found that those with periodontitis had a much higher rate of cognitive impairment than those with better oral health. Periodontitis occurs when the infection of the gums is allowed to advance without treatment. Then this infection reaches the tissue and bones that support the teeth. Gum disease is very common in the elderly, when dental hygiene is often neglected. The study examined precisely whether periodontitis is associated with increased severity of dementia and subsequent progression of impairment in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
After six months, the researchers repeated the evaluation in 52 of the patients and found that periodontitis as a basis was associated with a relative increase in the degree of cognitive impairment. The study authors concluded that periodontitis is associated with increased neurological damage of this disease, possibly by mechanisms linked to the body’s inflammatory response and the immune system overworking. Hypothesis have been put forward that an stressed immune system ‘mistaking’ and affecting parts of the brains.
According to the researchers, 80% of adults over 55 years in the UK in 2009 had periodontitis, which is the major cause of tooth loss. In addition, they claim that 40% of adults 65-74 years and adults over 75 years of age present less than 21 of their 32 teeth, most of whom report having gingivitis before losing them. These numbers are also similar to USA and Canada. This is why you should get dental cleanings twice a year to prevent gum disease.

The oldest denture in the world has been found in Italy!
The oldest denture in the world has been found in Italy!
A group of scientists have discovered a set of ancient dentures in the city of Lucca, Italy, very close to the city of Pisa. The members of the team from the University of Pisa are very excited to write another chapter in the history of dentistry. While people of all cultures have developed their own ways to deal with the loss of teeth, this is one of the most complete dentures that have survived to this day.
“Although there are descriptions of similar objects in texts from the period, there is no known archaeological evidence. The dentures found in the tomb are the first example of dentures from this historical period, and as such are a valuable addition to the history of dentistry.” said Dr. Simona Minozzi, one of the scientists that were part of the discovery.
Some people would be shocked to learn this denture is about 1500 years old! The craftsmanship is masterfully done taking into account the limitations of the time. The teeth seem to be from other different people (a common practice in the past for the lack of affordable durable materials) and are held together layer of metal, made mostly of gold and silver. The presence of tartar in them indicates these dentures were worn for a long time, so it could be implied they successfully fulfilled their purpose.
The denture was found in the tomb of the Giunigi family, and the scientists are still studying the remains of more than 200 skeletons. We wonder if any other of their family members decided to use similar prosthesis. Sadly, good dentures like these wouldn’t become available until several centuries later and even George Washington had to do with a bulky and bat fitting denture. It is a good thing you don’t have to worry about such things with Snap in Dentures, All-on-4, All-on-6 and many other options we have today.
The 12 worst habits that are destroying your teeth!
The 12 worst habits that are destroying your teeth!
Save your teeth! There are many factors that can promote diseases and leave you in need of dental implants, crowns or full smile makeovers. Remember the best way to save money is keep your mouth healthy with prevention. Here we leave you with a list of the 12 worst habits that are destroying your teeth:
Smoking. Nicotine darkens enamel and stains. It can also cause gum disease, which in turn loosen the teeth. it also gives bad breath, affects the taste buds … and can cause cancer in the mouth, lips and tongue (oral cancer). If there is one habit on this list that you must change urgently, this is it! Your mouth and all your body will gain immediate benefits.
Use your teeth as a tool. If you usually open bottles with your teeth, they can fracture and wear out! They are also damaged if you use them to open the medicine bottles and carton or paper containers. Avoid this as much as possible!
Grinding (bruxism). It loosens the surface of the enamel and can even loosen them. It also affects the jaw joint. Check with your dentist. You may even need to sleep with a special protector (night guard) so you do not do it unconsciously while you sleep. This might also signal you are under a lot of stress so you should try to identify the problems that are affecting you and work on them.
Nail biting. In addition to not being hygienic and making your fingers look bad, this habit increases the chances of you suffering from bruxism.
Cough drops. Apart from its medicinal value for a sore throat, you should not suck on these drops as if they were harmless. They are made of sugar, the same as candy! Brush your teeth after eating them.
Drink coffee. Its color and acidity can stain a tooth easily, turning it yellow.
Drink wine. Both red wine and white wine contain acids that deteriorate the enamel of the teeth, making them more vulnerable. The red wine also contains a pigment that stains. To reduce the harmful effect of wine, you should rinse your mouth with water after drinking it.
Drink soft drinks. Not only candies and sweets are full of sugar. Also soft drinks have a good amount, not counting the acids they contain, and they affect the enamel; these acids, incidentally, are also in diet drinks that do not contain sugar, so even then, they can affect you!
Chewing ice. Yes, it’s just frozen water, refreshing, sugar free … but it’s hard! Chewing ice can fracture teeth or cause damage to them.
Brushing your teeth very hard or with a hard bristle toothbrush. Doing can cause retraction of the gums and excessive sensitivity in them.
Brushing with horizontal strokes. You can wear the enamel of the teeth. The correct thing is to brush them with short circular movements on each teeth, making sure to try to reach on the crevices between them.
Using whitening toothpaste without a prescription. It’s true! Whitening toothpastes are way more abrasive to the enamel than regular toothpastes which means you could end up with increased sensitivity and other problems. Before buying one, check first with your dentists to see if this is the right option for you!
Local Anesthesia and you! – Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry
The Power of your smile makeover in Cancun
Our patients ask us a lot about what kind of anesthesia options we offer to help them deal with their treatment. While not all of the treatments require local anesthesia, you will likely get it while doing extractions, dental implants and root canals. You must know beforehand we mainly use local anesthesia, not Dentistry Sedation. You will be awake and conscious during all the procedure. Some people prefer Dentistry Sedation instead because that gives them peace of mind and they won’t remember anything afterwards.
Extraction is one of the procedures that most commonly requires local anesthesia. When it is necessary to remove a tooth that has been attacked by decay, the dentist will anesthetize the area of the mouth that is around the tooth. Wisdom teeth are another common cause of local anesthesia use.
Although root canal treatments have become much easier over the years, they are another example of the need for local anesthesia. When the pulp of a tooth is damaged or diseased, it is necessary to remove it and seal the part where the pulp was located, thus avoiding the extraction of the tooth. Probably, the most common need for anesthesia occurs, however, during the filling of a cavity. It is necessary to make a seal when a small section of your tooth succumbs to the cavities, creating a small area from where the dentist will remove the caries and whose cavity will be sealed.
The side effects of local anesthesia are sparse and sporadic. After local injection into your gums, for example, the medication may cause your eyelids to close or your cheek and lip muscles to relax. After the anesthetic effect passes, this numbness dissipates quickly.

Right-handed people have the teeth of the right side of the mouth more worn, while left-handed people use the teeth of the left more.
When we chew, we only move the lower jaw. It’s easier than moving your head up and down!
For thousands of years toothpaste was made with pomez stone, animal hoof dust and eggshells. Oddly enough, there was no real improvement in the composition of this product until the nineteenth century.
The world record for the world’s strongest teeth has a Belgian citizen, John Massis, who pulled several rail cars on Long Island with a rope between his teeth.

Heartwarming story of smile makeover in Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry!
Smile makeover with affordable dental implants and snap in dentures.
Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry has once again witnessed the amazing change that a smile makeover can bring to our patients. This time, we would like to talk about our dear patient Misty who came from Ohio to get affordable dental treatment with our dental implant experts. She had spent the last decade watch as her teeth deteriorated because of pregnancy, gastric bypass and other conditions. Misty was desperate to find a solution as her teeth started to breakdown. When she went to dentists in USA but they would hassle her and make her feel ashamed for the state of her mouth. She fell in despair when they told her the dental treatment for a full mouth restoration would cost her over $25,000 USD and would likely take months of coming and going to the dentists and the labs.
Fortunately, she found out about us on the internet and realized there was a solution for her smile makeover with affordable mini dental implants and snap in dentures. Even then, Misty took about 6 months to actually make her decision official because family and friends would disuade her from coming to Cancun. They thought the dentists here would be working on unsanitary conditions or they were not up to par to dentists in USA. Little did they know we are the leaders on dental tourism in Mexico and even host the Dental Implant Live Surgery Course by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry! Misty was blown away by the high tech and equipment at our dental clinic in Cancun.
Here is the video about her case:
Misty left us a message too:
It is a beautiful place to be. I don’t want to leave! Extremely impressed. The doctors and staff have been amazing! They have been patient, supportive informative, made me feel like a member of their family.

When he met our staff he decided this was exactly what he needed but time was short so he made an appointment for his next vacation. He did a full mouth makeover with a combination of porcelain crowns and dental implants that would have costed him almost $72,000 USD back in the States.
This is what Charles said about our dental services in Cancun:
Clean. Great staff! Everyone is helpful, friendly and happy. They have a positive attitude and that goes a long way. I recommend Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry often. Love all of you!

Second time in Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry (video review)
Affordable porcelain crowns in Cancun
Cancun has thousands of American and Canadian visitors every month, and many of them return each year to have fun. Some of these visitors then discover Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry while they walking through Malecon Americas Shopping Mall, one of the most popular shopping spots in Cancun! They get a big surprise when they decide to look inside the clinic and find a high tech first class dental practice with services that cost a fraction of the price back home. Some patients decide to get something quick like a dental cleaning or teeth whitening because they did not expect to find such a good opportunity in such a short notice, but most of our curious visitors end up making plans to get everything they need for their oral health and cosmetic dentistry on their next trip. An example of that is our patient Sherry, who came back to complete more the dental work. This is her video testimonial and transcription:
Hello I’m Sherry Green. This is my second trip back to the clinic. The first time I had 11 teeth done, the second time now, I had 4. The work was fantastic, saved a lot of money! The crew are very friendly. Very little pain. I saved a lot of money and I got to do some more vacation things with that, and I really recommend coming.
Ok, what is your plan about the next trip?
Next trip? sure. Take another week off work. Still be getting a little work done. A little is fine. It’s a great excuse to come to Cancun, to get work done!
Ok, what do you think about Cancun?
Oh, Cancun is fantastic. This is my fifth trip here. Yeah, absolutely wonderful.
