A dry socket happens when the clot that forms where a tooth was extracted gets dislodged or dissolved. This means the bone could be in contact with drinks, food and air in your mouth. That’s not a very pleasant sensation and if not looked after, it could even lead to infection. But don’t worry, not everyone develops this problem and there are certain preventive actions you can take to reduce the risk of getting a dry socket after a tooth extraction.

 

Some of the factors that could predispose a patient to get a dry socket are smoking, the continuous use of certain oral contraceptive pills, and pericoronitis (or some other infectious gum disease). It is very important to address these points with your dentists before your surgery. The dentist should give you a clear guideline of the cleaning routine you must follow while the socket heals. The Science of Flossing?

There has been a lot of talk about flossing not being backed up by science. You might have read several articles about inconclusive studies that didn’t find any marked benefit of flossing. The results should not come as a surprise because the methodology on each one can be easily questioned. Maybe the number of subjects were very few… or there wasn’t a control group.

 

 

In any case, dentists can tell with a look on your mouth if you are flossing or not just by checking your gums and the build up in hard to reach places for your toothbrush. Sure, maybe many people don’t know the right technique for flossing but is that just a reason to stop doing it? We need to think on the practical uses of flossing.  How many times have you had food particles stuck on your gums that your brush can’t reach? The bacteria on your mouth will feed on those particles. That bacteria affect the gums and produce acid on the surface of your teeth. It can also affect the gums where crowns and dental implants are set, so you need to be extra-careful with those.

 

One of the biggest reasons there isn’t more extensive information available about flossing is very simple. As explained in this other article, the cost to conduct a rigorous study to produce such evidence would be prohibitive, beside the point that falls on a very ethical issue of asking a control group to not floss at all if they have food debris between their teeth… FOR YEARS. Live Implant Surgery Course in Cancun Cosmetic Dentistry - Video Review Compilation

 

The Live Implant Surgery Course in Cancun was an amazing learning experience, not only for the visiting doctors but also for our staff. There’s always something new to learn everyday and we do it with love! This was a very interesting event. The AAID and the Dental Implant Learning Center had usually only done 2 courses at our clinic per year, but 2016 has surprised us…. this last event was the third one of the year! This year, more than twice a dozen American dentists have improved their dental implant skills with the help of Doctor German Arzate, Doctor John Minichetti and Doctor Larry Nalitt (as well as Doctor Iyer Shankar himself on the previous course).

 

In this occasion, we took  make videos with some of the participants of this live implant course in Cancun to talk about their impressions and what they learned.

Problems with Bad Breath (Halitosis)

 

Bad breath is one of the most common oral aliments, affecting 1 of every 2 adults. There are many reasons why people could be suffering from bad breath so we will over a few of them:

 

• Morning breath: During sleep the flow of saliva decreases, this facilitates the uncontrolled growth of bacteria producing foul-smelling gases. That strange taste in your mouth is because of this. We recommend to rinse your mouth with water as soon as you wake up.
• Dental prosthesis: Fake bridges and dentures can accumulate food debris. If left overnight unpleasant characteristic odor occurs (related to the above). This is why is strongly advised not to sleep with regular dentures as this can lead to growth of bacteria and even higher risk of pneumonia.
• Drugs: There are medications that cause xerostomia (dry mouth), such as anticholinergics, antidepressants, etc. Saliva helps clean oral cavity and reduces odor. Also, there are medications with a strong odor. In this case you should ask your general doctor if its ok do wash your mouth afterwards.
• Smoking: Smoking creates a characteristic breath that can last a few days, even after quitting. Besides affecting the gum and bone of your mouth this is one of the main “enemies” of oral health. We always advice to stop smoking as soon as possible to keep a healthy mouth.
• Disease: Periodontal disease and tooth decay can lead to bad breath. You should get treatment first for this, as well as traumatic ulcers, infectious stomatitis. If you have pharynx infection that could also lead to bad breath. Some patients even say a pharynx infection has a certain taste and know they need to go to the doctor when they sense it.
• Poor oral hygiene: Lack removal of oral biofilm (plaque) causes bacterial growth. Places where bacteria accumulate are the tongue, interproximal spaces, subgingival area, abscesses.

 

The regular Halitosis oral treatment is aimed at decreasing the number of odor-producing bacteria deposited on the mouth, tongue and  periodontal pockets.

Even though they might not need a teeth whitening, most people know that coffee can stain your teeth badly but you would be surprised to know that certain types of tea could have a very similar effect. We can agree that tea provides many benefits to health but there is evidence that has shown that tea can stain teeth even more than coffee on some instances!

 

Tannic acid, is a naturally occurring vegetable dye found on black tea. It is quick to adhere to the plaque on the teeth, and even can cause yellowish discoloration on the surface of enamel forming spots. In the case of tea and coffee, black tea has more “staining power” than green tea and the same goes with dark black coffee unless a lighter mixture is made diluted with milk or cream.

 

You really don’t need to give up your drinks completely but here are some tips to help you out.

• Swish a glass of water around after drinking a cup of tea or coffee.
• Make you coffee light brown and add a small amount of milk or cream
• Change your black tea bags for green tea or white tea if possible.
• Floss daily to remove stains and plaque along the edge of the teeth.
• Avoid using  teeth whitening toothpastes just because you want to counter the black coffee. Some pastes are extremely abrasive and you could end up with irreversible sensitivity. Always ask you dentist first!
• But not all teas stain your teeth, for example, green tea contains the chemical fluoride which strengthens teeth substantially.

• Rinse dentures after every meal, using a conventional toothbrush or a special denture brush.

• The use of toothpaste to clean this type of prosthesis is contraindicated because it causes opacity and deterioration of the outer layer of the prosthesis eliminating time its original brightness, promoting the porosity of the material, which in the future will facilitate aggregation bacteria to it and with it the formation of plaque and tartar.

• Dentists usually insists patients to clean their dentures, if not after every meal, at least once a day before sleeping.

• Remove the prosthesis to sleep (unless its a permanent one), since it is recommended that tissues of the mouth rest from the pressure they are subjected and also because sleeping with them has been liked to health complications like pneumonia.

• While the denture is kept out of the mouth, it is advisable to keep it in water, either alone, or by adding a disinfectant tablets.

• It is advisable to massage the gums with a soft brush after using a dentures to improve blood irrigation in the area and clean plaque build up on the tissue.

• For crowns and fixed bridges, brushing should be done in the same way as that of a natural tooth. There are flosses specially designed for this type of prosthesis, and is also recommended to use mouthwash.
