There are many, many reason to stop smoking and they just keep piling up. A group of scientist has recently discovered a link between exposure to secondhand smoke to babies of 4 months, trigger or accelerating tooth decay (dental caries) by the time they reach 3 years of age.

 

 

Although this link doesn’t mean causation, the study raises a few eyebrows. The main problem with baby’s oral health is that many people think that because they have not developed teeth yet they don’t need a dentistry evaluation, resulting in the shocking fact that up to 20% children between 2 and 5 years of age in developed countries suffer from dental caries.

 

 

The study was done by a team of researchers from Kobe City in Japan where they analyzed dental cases of 76,920 children born between 2004 and 2012 who were monitored from their birth, 4 months, 9 months, 18 months and 3 years of age. The study was done through a questionnaires given to the mothers to assess their habits.

 

As it turns out, 12,729 of the children already had dental caries, and compared to the children without a smoker in the family from 4 months old and before, they showed a twofold increased risk of caries.

 

The study reads “Exposure to secondhand smoke at 4 months of age, which is experienced by half of all children of that age in Kobe City, Japan, is associated with an increased risk of caries in deciduous teeth. Although these findings cannot establish causality, they support extending public health and clinical interventions to reduce secondhand smoke.”

 

In any case, this would be one more reason to stop smoking. Smoking can affect your own oral health, making you prone to gum disease, bone recession, dental implant failure and mouth and throat cancer. Is in your best interest to keep you healthy and protecting your smile!

Dental Implants in Cancun

 

Last month we had the visit of one of our dear patients to get his dental implant rehabilitated. Hershel from Texas was ready to get his new dental crown and complete his smile again. He had come to us months ago looking for cheap dental implants in Cancun as was happy with our services. We placed the dental implant and gave him instructions to come back later for the last part of his implant treatment. Hershel is pictured above with our Mexican dentist, Doctor Alejandra Lujan, and he would also like to thank Doctor Cesar Ibañez for all his help.

 

Individual dental implants can be placed in any area that has a missing tooth. The size can be wide, regular or narrow, depending on the tooth that is going to be replaced. The treatment is very simple and fast and only requires a minor invasive surgery where the doctor will open the gum and screw the implant into the bone, after it’s placed, the healing cap and gum will be sutured. This is not a painful procedure as it’s done with local anesthesia and it takes approximately one hour, also we offer sedation done by an anesthesiologist when needed. After inserting the implant, there will be a healing time to let the dental implant be Osseointegrated.

 

Osseointegration means that the bone will have grown and healed, binding itself to the structure of the titanium implant. The dental implants have a porous surface that will help bone cells to take hold. Titanium is used on these dental implants because of its high compatibility rate, unlike other metals that can oxidize and release elements into the body that will provoke a rejection from the immune system.  Titanium implants have a very low rejection rate as long as the patient follows the hygiene directions established by the doctor.

Nutrition and Oral Health

We touched before the fact that there is a wide range of foods that could affect your overall dental health, specially your gums or enamel (the protective layer of your teeth). Is important to note that poor nutrition will exacerbate current conditions like periodontal disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and something our dentists in Cancun can help you with. Beside the obvious influence on all kinds of infectious diseases in the body, one must get the proper amount of minerals, vitamins, proteins and fats essential for the growth and regeneration of tissues and to allow the immune system be in the best condition to fight all types of pathogens.

 

It’s well known that carbohydrates, protein and fat provide the energy to keep your cells “running” and make up for the building blocks of new tissue. Minerals and vitamins are also very important for the creation of enzymes and chemical reactions. Here we will give you a small run down of their job in your body.

 

Vitamin D: This vitamin will help you absorb much needed calcium for your bones. Is not commonly known, but a deficit of vitamin D can lead to burning mouth syndrome (dryness, metallic taste, burning sensation). Vitamin D sources include fish, egg yolks, milk and healthy amount of sunlight (always avoid staying too long under sun without sunblocker to protect yourself against UV rays and skin diseases).

 

Vitamin C: Make sure to get enough vitamin C to prevent bleeding gums (scurvy) and other complications. While most animals can synthesize their own vitamin C, human bodies must get them from their food. Make sure to eat crucifeorus vegetables (Kale, broccoli and brussels), as well as sweet peppers and, of course, oranges. Keep juices to a minimum for the same reasons stated on our previous article.

 

Vitamin B12: Also known as riboflavin is important for the blood. Low levels of B12 can mean anemia and also affect the nervous system. In the case or oral health, deficit of B12 can also provoke mouth sores. Eat enough fish, liver, chicken, red meats to get your recommended daily doses.

 

Niacin: It might be surprising, but lack of niacin can cause canker sores and bad breath! Chicken and tuna are the best sources of niacin.

 

Iron: Iron is used for many things in your body, and its deficiency could cause mouth sores, tongue inflammation and anemia. Good sources of iron include nuts, bran cereals and red meat.

 

Calcium: Last but not least, calcium should be one of the most important elements on your diet if you want to keep your oral health, specially for women entering menopause or who are pregnant. With age, the chance of the developing osteoporosis increases so its essential to keep your bones with enough calcium to prevent loosing your teeth too quickly.

Dental implants in Cancun

We would like to thank the visit of our dear patients Everett and Samantha who came to rehabilitate some of their dental implants in Cancun.
